analyst say in the age of video streaming, huge hd televisions that's a decent number. and it looked like 2013 could be better. a number of high-profile see quells will hit theaters including thor. ironman, superman star track and hunger games saga. it's the start of the new year and we have to look forward to times. but before we say our final good-byes to 2012 we will look at the best and worst of the year as good morning maryland at 5 begins right now. >> you're watching the station that works for you. now, good morning maryland. >> legally saying i do same sex couples in maryland spent the new year's celebration at the altar tying the knot. we are live with more on the big night. and the senate strikes a deal hours after the clock strikes 12. now the measure on the fiscalcliff is in the hands of the house. we will learn what they agreed upon to prevent us from falling

off the cliff. and with the fiscal cliff close to being averted, what about the debt limit for the credit cards of the country. it's almost maxed out and congress want to raise it. we will tell you about that on this tuesday, january 1st. good morning, and happy new year. i am charley crowson. megan is off today. hope your day is off to a great start. mike masco made it in and came in from the inner harbor where the spent the entire night partying. let's look at sights and sounds from last night quickly. thousands of people gathered in the inner harbor for the wonderful fireworks show. baltimore's new year's eve spectacular was hosted by the orioles. it was the tam's way of thanking fans for all their support from the past season. as you can see a number of people braved the cold taking part in this huge celebration. mike it was cold but you had tohave a good time. >> i didn't think it was that bad.

>> i mean relatively speaking. >> there's been years mr. crowson it's been 20 degrees. >> i am glad it didn't rain because you are afraid something like that is going to gum up the works. >> we came close by the way. i mean there's rain well to the southern maryland limits towards norfolkp but otherwise things look good. we are on the chilly side but it will get really cold over the next 24 to 48 hours. you notice we have got so lucky on this one. there's a storm running through roanoke that will be over the virginia, north carolina border and that's good news because it will keep the clouds in play and the precip will be down to the south. 43 in baltimore city right now. temperatures not bad but a lot of clouds will keep us pretty mild on the milder side. 43 for afternoon high. but it's going to struggle to get out of the 30s by tomorrow. we will talk more about that coming up in a little bit. charley. we are following breaking news out of the nation's capital. in the early morning hours of

the senate, they approved a measure on tax increases and spending cuts. that now goes before the house of representatives and ed payne has more on the overnight story. >> reporter: at the stroke of midnight many americans were celebrating and ringing in the new year. but the mood in washington was much more serious. vice president joe biden went to capitol hill after senate leaders struck a deal when the white house. the senate went back into session and around 2 a.m., vote >> as amended it's passed. >> reporter: in an 89-8 vote they approved a measure putting off spending cuts for two months and keeps the bush era tax cuts for individuals earning less than 400,000 dollars and couples earning less than 450,000 dollars. senate majority leader harry reid says the goal was to protect america's middle class. >> middle class families will wake up today to the assurances tax won't go up 2200 dollars

each. they will have the certainty to plan how they will pay for groceries, car payments and all during next year. >> reporter: minority leader mitch mcconnell said republicans agreed to the measure rather than let the middle class suffer. >> we don't think taxes should be going up on anyone but we all knew that if we did nothing they would be going up on everyone today. we weren't going to let that happen. >> reporter: the house reconvenes today at noon and is expect to take up the measure at that -- expected to take up the measure at that time. >> law makers have to worry about the debt ceiling they have to keep in mind. today, the u.s. will reach the legal borrowing limit of 16.# trillion dollars. the treasury department is take measures to buy time until the end of february but after that they will not be able to pay off all the country's bills in the full on time. congress must vote to raise the debt ceiling setting the stage for another showdown coming on

capitol hill. couples have been waiting a lifetime for the day and today same sex couples can legally marry in the state of maryland. it was approved by voters back in november. and this morning, sherrie johnson is live at city hall where some couples have come out to tie the knot and they did it after the stroke of midnight. >> reporter: a big day here. we are in front of city hall war number of people 7 couples to be exact tied the knot here at city hall in downtown baltimore a landmark day for maryland. baltimore city mayor stephanie rawlings blake actually hosted some of the first marriages for same sex couples in the state of maryland. she actually performed the first ceremony of the morning. the couples brought friends and family to take part in the historic ceremony new year's day will have a new meaning for many couples who can finally have the right to marry the person they love. same sex couples were able to get a license in december and today they were able to tie the knot with the new law.

new year's day marks the culmination of years of work by gay and lesbian marylanders and allies to persuade state legislators and voters to support full marriage rights for same sex couples. >> it's a very emotional night of incredibly meaningful night. there's so many people who have a chance now to have the life they wanted for themselves and their family and i am so proud of maryland that we chose equality over hate. >> i am just so thrilled that we actually have recognition of a relationship finally for thelegal rights and societal recognition of the relationship we have. >> reporter: the very first ceremony took place at 12:30 this morning. so these couples will go down as the first to say i do in the state of maryland. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. same sex marriage may be

the lawmaking history. it's not the only legal change you will see in the state. today a handful of other laws do take effect. there's a new law allowing veterans to have their veterans status show up on the driver's license. another aim to protect children from id theft by allowing parents to freeze their child'scredit any time they want. this morning we are learning more about the details of secretary of state hillary clinton's condition. doctors say she is suffering from a potentially serious blood clot located between her brain and her skull. it was found during a follow-up for the concussion she suffered a few weeks ago. clinton will be released from the hospital once her medication is established. doctors believe it will be sometime within the next two days. the secretary has been out of work for the past few weeks recovering from a stomach virus and concussion. she was supposed to return to work at state department this week. that's been postponed. time for a check of the forecast. back over to meteorologist mike masco with what's going on out there today. you used the word boring

confetti dropped on the midnight crowd. not everyone watches the ball drop. people down south participate in another sweet new year's eve tradition. look at this. more than 100,000 people gathered in atlanta for the 24th annual peach drop. look at that. the 800 pound peach began to drop before midnight. when the clock struck 12 it todd down and fireworks went -- it touched down and fireworks went off. you have one in new york and yesterday in mobile alabama the moon pie. >> moon pie. >> fireworks. >> and arkansas what do they drop? >> moving on. >> you don't want to go there. >> fireworks. fireworks just like over the inner harbor is big and fayetteville has a big celebration. >> okay. >> but, you know. >> here's what's going on outside. 35 you uncomfortable by that question? >> not at all. >> calm wind 29.97. falling pressure and things are looking good this morning.

everybody is happy new year. we are starting off on a chilly note. not a cold note but that will change over the next 24 hours. notice temperatures not too bad. manchester yesterday morning remember when we were talking, 25 degrees. right now, it's 37. so notice we are well certainly much warmer than where we were. a lot of clouds in place right now. clouds will take us through the course of the lunchtime hour. 40 goes to 41 on the 2:00 hour and on the way for 43 around 4:00. notice there is a storm but this is a very weak storm system that's going to slide towards south. the air over maryland is very dry. so this will pass off very benign system towards the south. 35 in town, buffalo 28, but look how cold the air is over central canada. that's dropping into the lakes right now. it will be through the ohio valley for tonight and right on top of us going into tomorrow. notice the clouds breaking up and going into tomorrow. it is mostly sunny skies. temperatures today will be right around 42 degrees on a mild side. 27 for tonight partly cloudy
